Do You Have WFD's?

04 November 2011

They are one of the best things you can do for you, your business, your clients and your family!

My son was sick recently and needed some TLC, and my wife had immovable commitments with the other 2 children.. Hence that left me to live into my family first value and be the father my son needed. So I should have felt great, present and happy right?

Well not exactly …

A part of me felt guilty because I had business things to complete that I committed to do earlier in the week. I was scared that I would not meet deadlines and let people down. I also did worry that I could be missing out on opportunities also, as I am not out there connecting with prospects and my clients. Sound familiar?

It got me thinking why did I CHOOSE these responses within myself. This was ridiculous and of course said “stuff this, my son and family need me and what is most important?” Easy question, simple answer.

So I decided and did have a WFD, which stands for “Work Free Day”!

It was a terrific bonding day with my son, the family was happy and I was really relaxed and felt amazing. The next few days afterwards, I did everything I was originally going to do on the WFD, plus more, with a smile and great results. This forced me to question why I could not do this proactively and consciously more often.

I mean, do you ever go into the office, turn the computer on and say to yourself “I am really tired and cannot be bothered today”? Or something like this?

All business owner’s do and really you ought to now ask “How do I respond to this situation when it arrives”?

Do you:

  • Work through and do the best you can
  • Feel guilty because it is work time and you SHOULD be working
  • Procrastinate on making any decision and waste a morning trying to get into the zone of production
  • Feel you cannot do it as it would set a bad example for your staff/team

Problem Mindset:  Guilt and fear you choose and DO from having WFD’s
Solution Strategy: Give yourself permission to re-energise

Most of us work through it, as this is what we have been taught to do or we make up “bullshit” excuses in our brains that if we did have a WFD, then we would be weak, lazy or slack.

In fact the opposite is true. 99% of people would not choose a WFD, hence it would mean you would be going against the tide which takes courage, foresight and strength.

The HOW you do it is - surrender to the feeling, listen to your body and walk out of the office and do something that will re-energise you. If that takes an hour or half a day or even a full day, then give yourself permission to do this and do it with a clear conscious.

The reason you can do it with a clear conscious is that when you do go back to your business to work, you will:

  • Be 2-3 times more productive than if you pushed through
  • Be able to serve your prospects, clients and team with a happier and calm disposition which will more than likely bear better results or ROI
  • Feel more refreshed and enthusiastic to tackle some key actions you and your business needs from you
  • Be happier within yourself as you “gave yourself a break”
  • Be enlightened that perhaps you can achieve what you want in business with one less day a week, fortnight or month (how exciting is that!!!)

Don’t believe me 100% right now, try it out for yourself. Next time you feel really flat, terrible and completely unproductive; give yourself permission, communicate with any existing appointments to reschedule them and then go and re-energise.

Your spirit will thank you!

Your loved ones will thank you as you will be happier and calmer!

Your business will thank you!

Have an amazing week and thank you for sharing this time with me
