What Business Are You In? (NO, Not What You Do!)
Are you sure that is the business you are in or are you describing what your business does?
This is a very powerful question to ask yourself in business and one that always turns heads and changes minds in the 3 day strategic planning retreat we deliver.
For example I had a strategic planning retreat a few weeks back with some amazing salesmen who own a very successful business in NZ. They came into the retreat telling me they were in the business of printer sales.
BUT, after some different questions (that they wouldn't normally ask themselves or each other) followed by some great conversation, a very different answer came out. They decided that they are 'actually' in the "information distribution and security" game/industry!
Big change right?
So what, you might say...
Consider the possibilities of their business communication and expansion NOW with this new found knowledge and awareness. Printers do actually have us distribute and secure information, but what is possible now with that information?
Being in that newly discovered industry, they could now do things like;
- offer soft copy data storage for clients
- offer scanning facilities or a scanning service to clients
- offer hard copy storage or destruction for their clients
- offer new technology options to print, store and secure with a click of a button
- and the list goes on
The reason why this is so important, the guys can now see a very real and possible way to increase their revenue by 150% and their profit by 300% over the next 5 years, EASILY!
Problem mindset: Using old, boring or surface filters to grow your business
Solution mindset: Redefine what business you are actually in and commit to be willing and open to new possibilities
You see when you look at your business and in fact life, through different filters, new possibilities and excitement are right there in front of you. All you have to do is be "willing" to;
- be open to them
- ask different questions (or be asked them by a trusted and wise 3rd party)
- commit to different solutions and options
- think outside the square
- put yourself in a different environment outside of your everyday business life
My wish for you upon reading this blog is that you start to ask yourself the question in the title and gain a more empowering and inspirational perspective as a result.
If you get a block with it, feel free to email Lisa and book in a free 30 min session with me and I am 100% positive you will find new and powerful answers to this question.
BUT, only do this if you have a business now that you are committed to expanding and making a difference to the world as a part of your legacy!
Have an amazing weekend!
