The Taboo Word in Business Is.....
No, not money, the other one!
Yes the word is …
Sales
I still think after all these years in business (on and off for 18 years) that it is ridiculous that sales is a taboo word for many – whether they want to admit it or not! A lot of business owners say it is not taboo, but their actions, or should I say lack of actions, says another thing.
This reminds me of an expression my second mentor told me “I cannot hear what you say as what you do speaks so loudly!”
Sales happens in our personal life every day, but because we do not have a strong negative stereotype about it in society, it is not considered taboo or scary for most. My teachers always said to me that if you have a girlfriend or boyfriend, husband or wife, children, friends, team members or family in your life – then you know how to sell and you are a salesman.
See what is the definition of sales?
In a business context – professionally helping people to buy – is what I subscribe to.
In a personal context – authentically having an enrolling conversation to an end point you desire – also what I subscribe to.
Think about that for a minute, how did you “woo” your wife or husband? By being the best you could be, giving your best so you looked terrific and attractive (not just physical) and you used words that illicit positive responses. So how is this not sales?
Sales are what makes or breaks a business and its cashflow. Sales are what makes or breaks relationships! Interesting concept right …

So it is critical that the number one thing you need to master to be a truly great sales person is to be terrific at enrolling conversations!
So if you could clear your belief system that has been generated from bad experiences or comments from influential people in your life that sales is bad, life becomes happier. Why?
Because your relationships with loved ones and friends will take another step forward. Because more people will use your services in your business, hence you generate more revenue and cashflow!
You cannot achieve the above, if you have a negative perspective on sales, you need a positive one like below …
Problem Mindset: Sales is for shonky people and I am not one
Solution Strategy: I love to sell as enrolling people and being authentic is what I am all about
Think about how life would be so much easier if you were more comfortable in having “enrolling conversations” with people in your business or your personal life.

Enrolling conversations can only happen if you;
- Come from a place of care and authenticity (people today can smell a rat or untoward intentions as our society is so much more educated)
- Take the time to truly understand what the other party WANTS
- Ask more questions than you do to advise or tell them
- Acknowledge what people say, before telling them your response (so they feel appreciated and heard)
- Listen while being present (not thinking of how you will respond) so you can ‘truly’ hear what they are ‘truly’ saying
The world doesn’t need any more shonky sales people or sleaze bags or the more discrete version called passive operators. We need alive, active, caring and community based people to become experts at enrolling conversation in our personal worlds and our business worlds.
Better salesmanship leads to;
- More personal satisfaction to you
- Better conversion rate for your business
- More experiences in your life where you achieve what you want
- Greater reputation amongst friends and peers
- More cashflow and lifestyle choices
Think about it and learn more as to how you can take the next step to enrolling conversations in your life.

You will not regret it, I guarantee it!!!
