What Is The Cost Of TV?

15 July 2012

What do you sacrifice by giving your time to TV?

As the old adage says "You can get money back, but you cannot get time back!" and if we truly believed this, how much TV would we watch?

Why do people watch TV?

  • to get away from reality and 'zone out' for awhile
  • to keep up with what is going on so they have things to talk about
  • to watch the 'cool' shows so they can relate to certain people in their lives
  • to watch things that inspire them

From my personal experience, the last reason is one I barely hear, and the first 3 are the most common. So why is this a big deal in my opinion and the world?

The courtship of my wife Sally was one of walking for hours and talking. We would always walk or sit at home through our pre-marriage and marriage years talking for 2-3 hours at a time about our thoughts, dreams, fears and concerns. It is what bonded us and what keeps us bonded! It allows me to truly understand my wife and ditto, hence we can love each other even more and truly support each others’ journey.

We hardly watch TV at all - less than 2 hours a week and our children only watch it on the weekends for 4-5 hours max. Why?

Because there is so much more to do! People yearn to belong according to Maslow and we love to connect. So why not use our precious and limited time resource in 'connecting' with real life people and have more conversations?

Problem mindset: watch TV to zone out, relax and pass time
Solution mindset: be conscious of time and use it most effectively

Tonight guests in my house wanted to watch TV.  Whilst they did that I spoke with 2 close friends and created some great plans for Xmas and bonded with them.  Then I wrote this blog and now I am about to meditate. What an awesome night!!!

If you did not watch TV, what could or would you do?

  • talk to your partner or have time with your children
  • speaking to your friends and family and building your relationships
  • read a book or watch a presentation that educates you and inspires thought
  • writing a blog or book that speaks your message
  • sleep and rest your body
  • do some exercise and feel better
  • put time into your hobby so your soul is inspired and feels uplifted

The returns of turning the TV off or cutting the cord completely opens you up to new possibilities in your world. Do not hide from the world and watch it to be cool or zone out! You were born with a dharma (purpose) and use every minute you have to live into it in some way, shape or form.

Try it for 1 week and see what happens without TV...

Here’s to a new, happy and different life, as opposed to the mass who are unhappy and unsatisfied in life.

With care and sincerity
